     John5 VARNUM (James (IM)4, John3, Samuel2, GEORGE (Varnham)1), born 23 Sep
1746 in Candia, New Hampshire; deceased 8 Jun 1803. He married ElizabethPATTON ,
daughter of Thomas .

Lived in Candia New Hampshire. Rev War RollsNH (voli, p 76) -enlisted asa private in
Captain Hezekiah Hutchins' Co, Col James reed's regiment: "JohnVarnum,
husbandman, Candia aged 28" - served 5/6-8/1/1775,paid for 3 mos 3 days 4
pounds 10 shillings 6d. He was with his regiment at the Battle of BunkerHill
4/19/1775 and wounded. Moore's History of Candia p 70 said he was paid 5
pounds 1 shilling for losses at battle for 1 blanket, 1 gun, 1 shirt, 1coat,
1 pack. His relative Lt Ebnezer Varnum also was paid for losses in that
battle. Lt Ebenzer, James, Jonas and John Varnum of Dracutt and JohnVarnum of
Candia were all in the same battle and fifth generation descendants ofGeorge
Varnham of Ipswich. JohnVarnum of Candia was with Gen nathaniel Stark'sNew Hampshire
militia at the battle of Bennington where he was also wounded. He isenrolled
among the Wilton New Hampshire soldiers in 1776 (New Hampshire Rolls voli,p 303) and appears in
"levies raised by the state of New Hampshire whose term of service werenot specified,
1780" New Hampshire Rolls vol 16, p 102.
