VETERAN BOILER INSPECTOR DIES, his obituary in the Danville Commercial News: John Burkmeyer, twenty years an employee of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois railway, the greater part of the time principal boiler inspector at the local roundhouse and one of the most popular employees of the company, died shortly after 5:00 Thursday morning at the Lakeview hospital of diabetic gangrene. The injury became more pronounced, and nine weeks ago he was compelled to enter a hospital. He was removed to St. Elizabeth's hospital, and after an effort to stay the progress of the ailment, his right leg was cut off, but this resulted only in delay. Last Saturday he was removed from St. Elizabeth's to the Lakeview hospital. Mr. Burkmeyer was 62 years of age. He was a native of Delphos, Ohio, where he was born Feb. 9, 1855, and when a young man learned the boilermakers trade in the Clover Leaf railway shops there. During his residence there he united in marriage with Miss Margaret Himmelright, who bore him ten children. There are seven of them living, together with the widow. The family removed from Delphos to Frankfort, Ind., another division point on the Clover Leaf railway, where Mr. Burkmeyer followed his trade for six years and then came to this city where he has been employed ever since at the Chicago and Eastern Illinois roundhouse. His position as boiler inspector was a very important one. The surviving children are: Bess, wife of H. I. Thompson, Oaklawn: Carrie, wife of Edgar J. Tilton, Thomasville, Ill.; Hazel, wife of Bronson Griggs, Jackson, Mich.; Nellie, wife of Rolla Carr, Danville; Miss Mary Burkmeyer, at home; John Burkmeyer, Jr., Decatur, Ill; and Albert Burkmeyer, residing at home. The body was removed from the hospital to Gilmore's and later was taken to the family residence at 102 State Street, Oaklawn. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon and Rev. Henry B. Wooding, pastor of the Immanuel Presbyterian church will officiate. The interment will be in Springhill cemetery. Members of the Boilermakers Union, the only organization to which the deceased belonged, will attend the services in a body and pall bearers will be selected from among the membership.
