within the limits of Bristol, Grafton, New Hampshire. In the spring of 1766, he came from Chester, Rockingham, New Hampshire and commenced a clearing on what is still the Emmons Farm, on the river about three miles from the village. Benjamin Emmons was a prominent man in his day. He was a Revolutionary soldier, and after the war was active in the militia. When 79 years of age he united with the Methodist Church, but all his children, born many years before this event, were scrupulously baptized in infancy and a record duly made in the family Bible. About 1788, Benjamin erected the two-story frame house that now stands on this farm, the oldest house in the town. Here he kept tavern for some years, and here his descendants have lived for three generations
