He was the son of Rev. Nathan C. and Sarah J. (Lovejoy) Lothrop and the husband of Della A. Tilton, who he married on November 4, 1886. He died by falling from a train in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts.

The Plymouth Record, January 4, 1890, p4.
A sad accident occurred on the Boston & Lowell Railroad about seven miles south of Nashua Wednesday evening by which an Express Messenger named Ormsby Lothrop lost his life. When last seen he was leaving the express car that runs over the Northern Road, where he had been to deliver some way bills*, to return to his own car that which runs up through here. He was a Clerk in the Concord office and acting as Messenger in place of the regular Messenger who was sick. At Nashua it was seen that he was not on the train and an engine was at once sent to look for him. He was found along the track with one leg cut off and head crushed, having fallen from the train, in all probability, while crossing the platform between cars. He was 28 years old and one time lived in Bristol where his father was a Baptist minister. He was regarded as a man of excellent character.
