Funeral services for William O. Bass, 87, of Mansfield, will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, February 22, 2002 in Centuries Memorial Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Jim Reynolds, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Mr. Bass was born in St. Maurice, LA on November 17, 1914. He passed away in Mansfield on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 after a sudden illness. He was retired from the automobile and service station business. Mr. Bass proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He had resided in Mansfield for the past three years and was a former resident of Shreveport and Calvin, LA. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mansfield where he served as chairman of deacons, having been a deacon for over 50 years. Mr. Bass was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 63 years, Reba Gibson Bass of Mansfield; two sons, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are deacons of Emmanuel Baptist Church. RobertsDAR 739336 Effie Olean Bass (Don't call me Effie) was born at Mamou, Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, a daughter of John Owen Bass and Martha Susan Tilton. She married her school sweetheart Cyrus Lee Roberts in Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi. They were married 50 years when she passed away at home in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas.Olean attended business school as a young woman in Vicksburg. Mississippi. During her career, Olean received many commendations and outstanding performance reports in recognition of her service. Olean continued her career for approximately 30 years and before her retirement at the Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas, in February 1983; she had attained a rating of GS-12, Management Analyst.Over the years, Olean was an active member of various organizations including Parent-Teacher Associations, Band Boosters Club, Scouts organizations, and others. Olean's memberships included the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Eastern Star, Coastal Bend Federal Employees Association, National Association of Federal Retired Employees, and the Board of Directors of the Navy-Army Federal Credit Union. She supported the American Cancer Society, United Way, American Red Cross, Muscular Dystrophy, and various other community groups.As Olean's interest grew in compiling her family genealogy, she joined the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was elected as a Regent of the DAR and maintained a very active schedule on behalf of the organization.
