.Thomas Tilton with his wife
and at least one child (John, born 1768) mi grated westward, following the
old wilderness trail through Maryland to the Redstone district in the
western part of Pennsylvania, beyond the Alleghenies. Three of his sons
appear to have been born at Redstone fort in 1774, 1776, 1778. Redstone,
Oh io, at that time was a place of assembly for the Tories of that
District, and in the winter of 1777, the British flag flew over Redstone.
The British forced the Colonists to take oaths of allegiance, or be
imprisoned. Which no doubt prompted Thomas to migrate further westward,
across the Ohio river, into the Northwest territory, which was not yet
opened to white settlers by the Government.
