Notes from Kevin Tilton
Daniel was a blacksmith and in 1667 Hampton allowed him "to sitte down asa smith" . They als o voted to receive him and granted him 4 acres onHampton Hill . He later bought 50 acres i n 1671 .
He served as juror in 1683 , 2684 , 1694 , and was deputy in the ColonialAssembly 1693-169 5 , and in 1702 . He was also elected Speaker in 1702.He was elected to the general Assembl y in 1709 , and 1711-1714 .
He and his sons maintained the road from Taylor's River to the high land, from the falls tow ard Exeter .
Daniel also managed to become an Ensign in the Militia . He built agarrison house in Hampto n and served in King William's War with his sonSamuel . The War of the Grand Alliance in Eur ope , from 1688-97 ,consisted of bloody raid and counter-raid between the colonials and Iroquois against the French , Huron , and Abenekis . It was followed by QueenAnne's War (1701-17 14) and more of the same .
A garrison house was a solid timber blockhouse with loopholes cut in formusket firing . A pr ojecting upper story overhanging the first enabledthe defenders to fire down on their assail ants .
For some reason , Daniel and others "forfeted thare rights" in HamptonMay 6 , 1715 , but exa ctly what happened is unclear .

Daniel, youngest son of William and Susanna Tilton, was born 1646. in Lynn, Massachusetts, and settled in New Hampshire. Hampton being in need of a blacksmith, he learned the trade and was given by the town a tract of land, four acres, on the Falls Hill, in the center of what is now the town of Hampton, about 1665. He married, December 23, 1669, Mchetable Sanborn, a daughter of William and Mary Sanborn, and from this union originate very nearly all the Tillons of New Hampshire and many of Maine and Vermont. Daniel Tilton was a streng man in town matters and government. As his family grew large he settled on land between Hampton and Exeter, building a block house which protected his family and other settlers from Indian attacks. History says that, having a large family of stalwart sons, they always successfully defended themselves when necessary to do so. He was known as Ensign in early history, and represented Hampton in general court from 1690 to 1713, during some of which time he served as speaker. Fnally, being very infirm, he asked and was excused by the court from further duty. He died February 10, 1716. in Hampton. His sons settled in Hampton and adjoining towns. Their descendants, moving to towns further out, spreading through New Hampshire to Vermont and Maine, were among the earliest settlers. We find them in the great west and on the Pacific coast, always among the pioneers, and many of them making honorable records in the new sections. The family has had many professional men, clergymen and doctors (but very few lawyers), and many military men who were distinguished in their services in all the colonial wars and the later wars of the republic. Daniel Tilton's children were : Abigail, Mary (died young), Samuel, Joseph, Mary, Daniel, David, Jethro, Mchetable, Hannah and Jo- siah.

Philip Tilton (1741-1835), in 1775, commanded a company in Col. EnochPoor's New Hampshire re giment. He was born and died in East Kingston, N.H.
[p.333] Timothy Tilton (1748-1831) enlisted, 1776, as ensign in Capt.Nathan Brown's company , Col. Long's regiment, at Ticonderoga. He wasborn in Kensington ; died in Sandown, N. H.
Joseph Wadleigh (1711-92), in 1776, signed the Association Test ofBrentwood, N. H., where h e was born and died.
Joseph Wadleigh, Jr. (1744-1821), served as a private in the NewHampshire militia. He was bo rn and died in Brentwood, N. H.

Elijah Sanborn was placed on the pension roll, 1832, of St. JosephCounty, Mo., for service a s private in Capt. Enoch Page's company, Col.Joseph Senter's regiment. He was born, 1761, i n Fremont, N. H.
Richard Sleeper was lieutenant in Capt. Abraham French's company ofKingston, N. H. He was bo rn, 1738, in Kingston, where the died.
Joseph Wadleigh (1752-1818) served as a private, 1778, in Capt. MosesLeavitt's company, Col . Moses Nichol's regiment of volunteers in theRhode Island expedition. He was born and die d in Kensington, N. H.
