Stephen Tilton died at his home in Union Park Street, in Boston, of "apoplexy." Since coming to Boston from Newburyport he had been engaged most of the time as a tobacco commission merchant. He was a member of the Common Council from Ward 11 in 1853 and 1854. "The sudden death of a beloved son a few years ago cast a gloom over his after life, which neither time nor travel in foreign lands could dispel." (Stephen's eldest son, Stephen, had died five years earlier, at the age of 19.) His funeral took place at his residence. Rev. Dr. Webb of the Shawmut Church conducted the service. He was buried in Mt. Auburn.
