Obituary of James Tilton
James Tilton, the subject of this sketch, was born at Sparta, Noble county, Ind., September 3, 1845. He was the third son of Obadiah and Lois Stone Tilton. Soon after his birth his parents returned to Orangeville, N.Y., where they spent the remainder of their lives. James was reared on a farm and followed that occupation during his lifetime. His ancestors, on both his paternal and maternal side were among the earliest settlers of this country, having arrived here from England in 1939. They were a hardy and patriotic people, having taken part in every way after their arrival here in defense of their country. One of his great-grandfathers was severely wounded at the battle of Stillwater, now Saratoga, in the Revolutionary war. In 1864, when the Civil War was at its height, James, at the age of 19 years, enlisted in the 9th N.Y. Cavalry, then with Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley, and was with them until Lee's surrender at Appomatix. Soon after his return from the army he married Violet A. Bump. She died April 23, 1875.
He was a man of sterling qualities and of exceptionally good judgement on all matters pertaining to the farm and stock and his advice was often sought by his friends and neighbors. In politics he was a Republican an was a strong believer in the policies of that party.
His funeral was held at his late residence on Tuesday, Nov. 14th. Rev. Roberts of the Congregational church officiating, assisted by Rev. Fairbanks of the F.M. church. The weather was very inclement but the large concourse of people, many from a long distance, who attended, attested to his worth as a man and the high esteem in which he was held by everyone with whom he became acquainted.
He leaves to mourn their loss, two brothers and one sister, R.J. Tilton of Arcade, N.Y., R.S. Tilton of
Batavia, and Mrs. Emma L. Calkins of Johnsonburg, and a large number of other relatives and a host of friends. (Source unknown, probably the Western New Yorker
