Bertie was the third child of seven born to Hamilton DeVilbiss and Mary Elizabeth Norwood in Fredericks Co. Maryland. Bertie and her family lived in Maryland until the spring of 1881 when they moved west to Kansas. She grew up a typical farm girl. Her family homesteaded in Oklahoma in 1893 and it was there that she met Elbert H. Tilton whom she married 23 Nov 1895 and moved to Harper Co. Kansas. Bertie and Elbert joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 18 June 1899. They moved to Arizona in 1902 and settled in St David, Cochise Co. where they worked a farm/ranch. She was a faithful member of the Church and served as called. Bertie and Elbert opened their home to the missionaries and often had as many as 22 staying their at a time. In her charitable nature she was always willing to help those that were in need or less fortunate. She was the mother of three girls. She lived the remainder of her years in St. David where she passed away on 22 Feb 1954. Her legacy is three daughters, eleven grandchildren four great-grandchildren.
