Note for:   Mary Eugenia Tilton,   29 Jan 1864 - 26 Dec 1903         Index

Individual Note:
The following unidentified newspaper articles were found in a scrapbook owned by Betty Burton of Lowell:
PASSED TO A HIGHER LIFE MRS. WILLIAM NEWKIRK
Mary Eugenia, only daughter of John and Irene (Ragon) Tilton, was born near Upper Sandusky, Ohio, January 29, 1864, and died at her home near Lowell, Ind., at 12:15 p.m. December 26, 1903, aged 39 years, 10 months and 27 days. In April 1865, when she was but a little more than a year old, her parents removed from Ohio to Indiana, settling near Lowell where she has since continuously resided. She was a woman of rare social qualities, the result being that she made warm and fast friends of those with whom she met. To know her was to love her and those who knew her best loved her best. Her friends, who were legion, were always greeted with a warm welcome; her pleasure at meeting them always being attested by a smile of true friendship. If she ever lost her patience it was never perceivable by those about her.
In her death her husband has lost a true and loving wife, the mother a dutiful daughter, the children a kind and loving mother and the community one who was ever ready to oblige and to assist to the utmost of her ability.
September 10, 1885, she was united in marriage to William H. Newkirk . To this union six children were born - five girls and one son, who together with father, survive their mother. Truly a good woman has fallen; one who will not only be sadly missed by her immediate family, but by a very large circle of friends and neighbors. She leaves her husband, six children, an aged mother, two brothers, Harry, of Whiting, Indiana, and Frank E., of Orchard Grove, who have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
Her funeral occurred from the Orchard Grove school house at 1 o'clock p.m., Tuesday. Rev. D.D. Hoagland preached the funeral discourse and the Lowell M.E. church choir furnished appropriate music. Undertaker John Castle had charge of the burial service. The following acted as pall bearers:
George Cottrill, Lewis McNay, E.T. Hill, Charlie Hill, Alonzo Dickinson and Frank Potter. Interment in Orchard Grove cemetery.
