The reinforcements were soon in action, andthe battle lasted until night when the ene my retreated under cover ofdarkness. He served in Rhode Island, 1778, when the army was coöp eratingwith the French fleet to expel the British from that province. He was amember of th e Committee of Safety and of the convention that framed theState constitution.
