Dear John Tilton,

You have a Walter S. Conklin listed as a son of Solomon Conklin & Catherine Tilton (on your WorldConnect site). I was going to write and suggest that should be Warren S. Conklin - but you don't have any dates - so maybe Walter was born after 1850 & was a brother of Warren.

My interest in this family, is that Solomon Conklin & Catherine/Catharine were living in the same dwelling as my great-great-great-grandparents, Nathaniel & Henrietta Holmes, in 1850. They can be found in the 1850 Census, 4th Ward of Brooklyn, Kings County, N.Y., Pages 332-333. I can send you a copy, as a 102 KB gif. I think there might be a family connection between the 2 households - but I don't see it.

Catherine Tilton, must have been Solomon Conklin's 2nd wife, as he has 4 children before his marriage in 1845.

In 1880, Catherine (Tilton) Conklin, is widowed, & living in Middleton, Monmouth County, New Jersey, with her widowed mother, Catherine (Hendrickson) Tilton. Also living in Middleton, (in a different dwelling), is Warren S. Conklin, his wife, Sarah E., & son George M., & 3 farm hands. Those census entries can be found at the Latter Day Saints familysearch site - or I can send them as web pages.

I don't know Henrietta Holmes' maiden name, maybe she's a half sister of Catherine (Tilton) Conklin?

Sincerely: Frank Holmes
Dear John,

I found a death date for Solomon Conklin (see attachment). Solomon Conklin, d. Oct. 29, 1851 at age 43, Bur: Oct. 31, 1851, Lot # 2231, section 57, Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, N.Y.

Also in the same lot:
Solomon T. Conklin, bur: Mar. 24, 1852
Eliza D. Conklin, bur: Jan. 12, 1912
d. Jan. 10, 1912, Kings Co., age 74, death cert # 753
George N. Conklin, bur: July 2, 1894
Herman D. Conklin, bur: Feb. 24, 1917
d. Feb. 21, 1917 Kings Co., age 56, death cert. # 4691
Ida P. Conklin, bur: Nov. 20, 1959
Joseph W. Conklin, bur: Sept. 7, 1898
Julia Conklin, bur: Nov. 13, 1943
Laura Conklin, bur: May 18, 1926.
d. May 15, 1926, age 56, death cert. # 11960
Mary Conklin, bur: Apr. 15, 1926
Mary E. Conklin, bur: Mar 7, 1907
P. B. Conklin, bur: Jan. 4, 1848
Phebe P. Conklin, bur: Jan. 4, 1848
Sophia Conklin, bur: July 28, 1851
William Conklin, bur: June 3, 1924
d. May 28, 1924, Kings Co., age 89, death cert # 11247
William S. Conklin, bur: Mar. 18, 1906

I don't see any burials before 1845 - so I don't think Solomon Conklin's previous wife is buried here.

There's a Solomon T. Conklin. I bet he's a son of Solomon & Catherine (Tilton) Conklin, born after the 1850 census.

There are P.B. & Phebe P. Conklin. I bet they are new born twins. The 1848 date would make them children of Solomon & Catherine
---------------------------------
Hearne's 1850-51 Brooklyn City Directory, page 87, shows only one Solomon Conklin, a mason at 191 Pearl.
--------------------------------
The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Oct. 27, 1859, page 4, col. 3.

Solomon Conklin's eldest son, John H. Conklin & his wife Isabella C. Conklin, sued the following:

Catherine T. Conklin
William Conklin & Eliza R. Conklin, his wife.
George N. Conklin.
Mary E. Conklin.
Warren S. Conklin.

This had to with quite a few properties in Brooklyn. Including lot # 2231 at Green-Wood cemetery, & property that appears on a map entitled, "Map of property in the Sixth Ward of the City of Brooklyn, belonging to the heirs of Johannes Debevois, deceased; Brooklyn. Apr. 1836; surveyed by Issac T. Ludlam, City Surveyor."

Maybe Solomon Conklin's 1st wife was a "Debevois"

I do have this article as a gif image, 750 x 1980 pixels, 187 KBs. That's somewhat large. I'm more then willing to send it, if you don't mind that many kilobytes in your mailbox.

I got all this stuff through the Kings County / Brooklyn Genweb site.

Sincerely: Frank
