Charles is described in his Military Record as 5'8'' , light complection, blue eyed with dar k hair . When he was mustered in , he rec'd $13 inadvance . Records state he was not paid ag ain until 1863 . He is on theCo. muster roll from Sept. '62 . He was absent sick during Apri l '63 .In Jan/Feb of '64 , he enjoyed a 21 day furlough .

After several hours of waiting under fire ,rebels under Kershaw andSemmes began pressing a b attery the 2nd was supporting . Taking 354 officers and men into battle , the 2nd lost 193 , with 47 kia or dying from theirwounds . In " New Englan d Vital Records from the Exeter News Letter" byScott Lee Chipman , 1859-1864 , a letter fro m Charles , "written on thebattlefield" is quoted giving the local casualties .
After Gettysburg , the 2nd became prison guards on the Chesapeake untilApril of '64 .
